Steps To Becoming A Christian

Hear the Word

Faith comes through hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God (Romans 10:17).
Until someone hears God's Word, they are incapable of obeying it.

Believe the Word

It is impossible for someone to become a Christian unless they believe that Jesus is the Saviour and Son of God (John 20:31, Acts 16:31, John 3:16, Hebrew 11:6).

We must believe that the one true God of the Bible sent his son Jesus from heaven as a once-for-all sacrifice for the sins of the world. We must believe in Jesus' sinless life, death on the cross, and resurrection from the dead. This is the gospel, as defined in 1 Cor. 15.

Repent of your sins

The Christian walk requires a complete 180-turn away from a life of sin to a life of righteousness. The Bible calls this act repentance. Repent means a change of mind and of action. That change of mind always involves a change of action as well. When a person commits his life to Jesus, he must turn away from their old ways and habits in order to submit to and follow a new Master and His word. Repentance is a requisite of salvation (Mark 6:12; Luke 13:3,5; Luke 15:7).

Confess Jesus

If we have made a commitment to Jesus, we must be prepared to confess Him as our Lord. If we won't confess Jesus before men, He won't confess us before God (Matthew 10:32-33, Luke 12:8-9).

Be baptised in the name of Jesus for salvation

Many groups baptise people, but very few baptise people for the right reason. Baptism isn't merely an “outward showing of an inward faith “for membership. Baptism is what saves us (1 Peter 3:21). Baptism is for the remission of sins and is the point where someone goes from being lost to being saved because they are buried and resurrected with Christ (Romans 6:4-5). Baptism is one of the requirement to become a Christian (Acts 2:37-38, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:41).

We come up out of the water to "walk in newness of life."

God then adds us to the church (Acts 2:47). Not by vote or the decisions of men, but God alone adds us to His Church.

Rise to walk a new life

Just as Jesus was buried and rose from the dead, we must also rise from the watery grave of baptism to walk a new life in Jesus Christ (Gal. 3:27, Rom. 6:3-4).

We must live our lives in faithful and loyal service to our Lord Jesus Christ as God has directed (Revelation 2:10). We must find a congregation that believes and practices as the New Testament directs... following the Word of God... speaking where the Bible speaks, living by His Word and His Word alone. Trusting in God to save us as He has promised those who would be faithful to Him.
